One day in Burgos

One whole day was dedicated to getting to know the city of Burgos. It’s the capital city of the province, called Province of Burgos, about 40 kilometres from Lerma. There are about 170 000 inhabitants.

The main point of our visit was the excursion to the Cathedral of Burgos. The visit was very interesting and apart from its attractive history, what really impressed me was its organ. The organ has a really interesting shape which is for us pretty unknown, but for this region it is quite typical. The most important thing is the Horizontal Trumpets. By the way, in Lerma there are two organs. One of them is dated in 1616 and is it one of the oldest organs in whole Spain.

Then we went for lunch, where we ate typical Spanish food called tapas, and then we continued our excursion through the city. We saw Museo de la Evolución Humana, which is Museum of Human Evolution, and the City Hall. On our way to the City Hall, we saw some interesting statues of musicians playing some weird flutes and tamburins. They are called Dulzainero and Tamborilero (instruments are called dulzaina and tamboril) and you can see them in a picture below.

The Camino de Santiago crosses Burgos too, also known by the English names Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela. After that we went to one café to eat typical Spanish sweets called churros with hot chocolate. That’s fried dough which is dipped in hot chocolate.  In the evening we went back to the bus station and back to Lerma.
